My steps for new mp3s. Share yours! (3 replies)

Ive been using ID3 renamer for several years and it is by far the best ID3 tagger out there. Thank you Jiri for taking the time to write this program.

I thought it woud be neat to see the steps everyone takes with their mp3's. This may also help Jiri to know how we use ID3 renamer.

Here are my steps:

1. If need be I use dBpoweramp Music Converter to convert all non-mp3's to mp3 format (Lame ABR 320 kbps).

2. I use ID3 renamer to clear all unwanted comments, copyrights, links, etc.. (pretty much everything below genre in the list). Then I set tags Artist, Album, Title, Track, Disc #, Year and Genre. Last I change the file name to %Artist - %Album - %Title in folder %Artist - %Album.

3. Normalize volumes of all mp3s to 91.0 db with MP3Gain (default is 89.0 but its too low for me).

4. Move completed mp3's to storage harddrive and enjoy!

That's about it. This may not work for you, its just what I do. Now, what are your steps?

P.S. Jiri, I would like to donate but your paypal link is not working, please send/post a link.

Feature Request (progress window with DataGridView) (2 replies)

Hi I just found this great little gem, and i ran on some of my mp3's.
I like it, but,- it's kind of annoying to press ok a gazillion times, I realize that there might be a feature to turn this off??
But anyway it got me thinking about a usability seminar I once took (Yes I'm a developer too.)
"If the UI isn't obvious - it's wrong" I know it's harsh, but hey, you're developers - you can handle it :-)
Ok here's the idea:
Never ask the user to decide inside the process... Instead give the user a chance to undo.
Since you have a progress form, you could add a DataGridView to that form, and as the process runs, populate the grid with the replaced names (tooltip the original filename if you like)
add a CheckboxColumn and an undo button somewhere on the form.
When the user presses the undo button all checked mp3's should be given their original name...
This Design can also be used to manually edit the mp3 file names.

Keep up the good work guys, and put a donate button on the page you have earned a little shoulder pad :-)
-Danny

"If you code it, they will come..."

PLEASE bring that back in 3.x. Not only is it tedious and slow to use the new version, but if I subsequently delete the folder I was sorting from, I have to browse allll the way back in through the hierarchy to the next one.

2 - The window is never large enough, the Go button is hidden. This is under Vista and XP. There is no way to resize the window to reveal it, I have to Tab to it.

and doing that reveals

3 - The tab order is all messed up, tabbing down, skipping options, then back up again to them.

I have also desired for a long time to omit the track total and disk total, so thank you so much for that one!

If these few things could be corrected, then this program will be brilliant.

Tag from Filename Problems - Out of Memory, Regex oddities (13 replies)

First off... thank you, thank you, thank you! I can't tell you how long it took me to find an application that would let me do batch ID3 tagging based on regular expression parsing of the path. This is just what I've been looking for. If only I could get it to work.

Essentially, it's crashing on my pretty consistently.

This is on a laptop with Windows XP SP3 and 2GB of RAM, using ID3 renamer 3.0.2

Tag from filename with options checked:
- exclude extensions (I should try with it included... okay, just did, same result)
- use full path

When it crashes, I get a "Tag from filename" dialog box that says

Quote

Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately.

Exception type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown.

Full details from the error message below, but first I want to say what is happening.

I have tried a variety of regular expressions. If I start with a .* then my capture groups, as in
.*(subfolderName)\\(Filename)

Everything looks good in the previews in the Matches and Fields areas and it will get things right in the ID3 tags, up until it fails about 6 tracks into it. I've tried this using greedy and non-greedy expressions, so
.*(subfolderName)\\(Filename)
.*?(subfolderName)\\(Filename)

I'm not sure if ID3 renamer recognizes the full POSIX syntax or not, but it seems to make no difference and really shouldn't, since there is not repeated group, so the greedy search is the same in my case.

If I just start with a capture group and don't match the beginning of the string, so

(subfolderName)\\(Filename)

It still shows correctly in the Matches and Fields panels, but when I actually hit Continue and write the tags, it actually inserts the full path (effectively, inserting match $0 as it were).

In all cases, it crashes after about 6 tracks, always giving the Out of Memory exception, which is strange, since I frequently run Photoshop, a testbed server and many applications at once on this system without memory errors, and I'm doing this without a lot of applications open.

I've tried a handful of scenarios... no joy. The straight up tagging, not Tag from Filename, works fine.

Full error message details.

Quote

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** Exception Text **************
System.OutOfMemoryException: Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown.
at ID3 renamer.TagClasses.ID3v2.ReadFrames34(String fileName)
at ID3 renamer.TagClasses.ID3v2.ReadFromFile(String fileName)
at ID3 renamer.Writing.BasicWriting.Execute()
at ID3 renamer.Writing.Features.TagFromFilename.TagFromFilenameForm.btnContinue_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e)
at System.Windows.Forms.Control.OnClick(EventArgs e)
at System.Windows.Forms.Button.OnClick(EventArgs e)
at System.Windows.Forms.Button.OnMouseUp(MouseEventArgs mevent)
at System.Windows.Forms.Control.WmMouseUp(Message& m, MouseButtons button, Int32 clicks)
at System.Windows.Forms.Control.WndProc(Message& m)
at System.Windows.Forms.ButtonBase.WndProc(Message& m)
at System.Windows.Forms.Button.WndProc(Message& m)
at System.Windows.Forms.Control.ControlNativeWindow.OnMessage(Message& m)
at System.Windows.Forms.Control.ControlNativeWindow.WndProc(Message& m)
at System.Windows.Forms.NativeWindow.Callback(IntPtr hWnd, Int32 msg, IntPtr wparam, IntPtr lparam)

************** Loaded Assemblies **************
mscorlib
Assembly Version: 2.0.0.0
Win32 Version: 2.0.50727.3603 (GDR.050727-3600)
CodeBase: file:///c:/WINDOWS/Microsoft.NET/Framework/v2.0.50727/mscorlib.dll
----------------------------------------
ID3 renamer
Assembly Version: 3.0.0.0
Win32 Version: 3.0.0.0
CodeBase: file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Theresa/Desktop/software/Entertainment%20Audio%20and%20Video/ID3 renamer/ID3renamerRC7.exe
----------------------------------------
System.Windows.Forms
Assembly Version: 2.0.0.0
Win32 Version: 2.0.50727.3053 (netfxsp.050727-3000)
CodeBase: file:///C:/WINDOWS/assembly/GAC_MSIL/System.Windows.Forms/2.0.0.0__b77a5c561934e089/System.Windows.Forms.dll
----------------------------------------
System
Assembly Version: 2.0.0.0
Win32 Version: 2.0.50727.3053 (netfxsp.050727-3000)
CodeBase: file:///C:/WINDOWS/assembly/GAC_MSIL/System/2.0.0.0__b77a5c561934e089/System.dll
----------------------------------------
System.Drawing
Assembly Version: 2.0.0.0
Win32 Version: 2.0.50727.3053 (netfxsp.050727-3000)
CodeBase: file:///C:/WINDOWS/assembly/GAC_MSIL/System.Drawing/2.0.0.0__b03f5f7f11d50a3a/System.Drawing.dll
----------------------------------------
System.Core
Assembly Version: 3.5.0.0
Win32 Version: 3.5.30729.1 built by: SP
CodeBase: file:///C:/WINDOWS/assembly/GAC_MSIL/System.Core/3.5.0.0__b77a5c561934e089/System.Core.dll
----------------------------------------
System.Configuration
Assembly Version: 2.0.0.0
Win32 Version: 2.0.50727.3053 (netfxsp.050727-3000)
CodeBase: file:///C:/WINDOWS/assembly/GAC_MSIL/System.Configuration/2.0.0.0__b03f5f7f11d50a3a/System.Configuration.dll
----------------------------------------
System.Xml
Assembly Version: 2.0.0.0
Win32 Version: 2.0.50727.3082 (QFE.050727-3000)
CodeBase: file:///C:/WINDOWS/assembly/GAC_MSIL/System.Xml/2.0.0.0__b77a5c561934e089/System.Xml.dll
----------------------------------------
g7nfvt0b
Assembly Version: 2.0.0.0
Win32 Version: 2.0.50727.3053 (netfxsp.050727-3000)
CodeBase: file:///C:/WINDOWS/assembly/GAC_MSIL/System/2.0.0.0__b77a5c561934e089/System.dll
----------------------------------------

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

However, when I try to add tags to certain folders some of the song files within them will not receive the tag (some do though!). Any ideas why this might be and how to fix it?

The only trouble I've seen so far is on Tag from filename will not remember the 'Matches and tag fields'.

A 'random file' is displayed
The last RegEx is displayed
Exclude extension is unchecked
Use full path is checked
Nothing shows up in 'Matches/Tag'

If I uncheck then recheck Use full path I get the Matches/Tags but all tags default to Artist and I have to reset all fields. This also happens if I change Exclude extension with Path checked.

Is there a setting somewhere for the program to remember RegEx layout that I'm missing?

ID3 renamer v. 2.15.15

Nearly all of them have tags, containing at least Artist, Name of the song, and Album. Would the ID3 renamer be able to create directories and subdirectories according to the artist and album name and then move the mp3-file into that newly created subdirectory? If not - does anybody know a software that can do this accurately?

All the best from Germany.

DidiE

Tag From Filename tutorial (19 replies)

After reading some of the posts in the forum I decided that a regular expressions tutorial might be useful, so here is a quick and dirty one that should help most people...

In the Tag From Filename window you are shown an example song and a regular expression text box. For this tutorial tick both the check boxes under the regular expression.

I am going to use the following filename for my example.

R:\Mp3\Trance\Albums\Astral Projection - The Astral Files (1996)\04 - Free Tibet.mp3

There are two types of information in the file name, words that we want for our ID3 tag, and characters that seperate the words. Also, some of our seperating characters are what is called 'special characters' in regular expressions. Special characters need to be preceeded by a \, so when we get to the \'s in our file name, we will write them as \\.

As not all of the full path will be used in the ID3 tag, start your regular expression with .* this just means 'any number of an characters'.

Now, find the first part of the file name that you want to use, in this case it's the artist name "Astral Projectison", then find the seperating character just before it, in this case "\". Add this to your regular expression.

*.\\

Then we want to add the first information field. An information field is always .* surrounded by brackets (.*)

.*\\(.*)

Now add the next seperating character, this time it's actually three characters, a space, a minus and another space, and the next information field.

.*\\(.*) - (.*)

The next information field is the year, which is surrounded by brackets. Brackets are another special character in regular expressions, so we must write them as \( and \).

.*\\(.*) - (.*) \((.*)

Now the track number, which is seperated by a bracket and a backslash. We need to write this as \)\\, so we end up with...

.*\\(.*) - (.*) \((.*)\)\\(.*)

Then lastly we have another space-minus-space seperator, which gives us our completed expression.

.*\\(.*) - (.*) \((.*)\)\\(.*) - (.*)

Regular expressions are extremely powerful when working with text. For more info you could start by having a look at [www.regular-expressions.info]

I hope this helps. :)

Eddie

Track Numbers Not Numbering Correctly (10 replies)

Hi, I would like to use your program to renumber my track numbers. I've pulled all the tracks from an audio book, each disc files contain their respective track numbers 1 thru 10, 1 thru 12 and so on.

I used the main page, unselected everything except "track", then selected the tab "Remove tag" to erase all the current track numbers. On the "Renaming" tab, i have selected "trim left padding zeros in Track" and "pad to setted fixed length of chars" set to 3 (the audio book have 137 tracks), I then selected the drop down option "track from file-order"

The program does not start at the first file, always somewhere down the list, the completed from the top down. My current example, the track numbering started down on the 13th file renumbering in order, then finishing from the top.

Please advise.

Jesse
